You Bet They Die: Greyhound Racing Dog Deaths and Drugging Continue as new Inspector Languishes Without Investigative Powers Required

Tragedy struck twice last week at the Angle Park Racetrack, where two greyhounds were killed within just an hour of each other. Ripper Rose, just two-years old, was euthanised by an industry vet, while during the ‘We Love Our Dogs’ race Marlee Grey suffered a catastrophic shoulder injury and was then euthanised on track.

These latest two known on track greyhounds deaths bring the toll to eleven this year.

While dogs continue to die, the Malinauskas Government continues to pump public money into a private gambling operations and the promised clean-up of the industry lies limp, still waiting for the powers it needs for the GIRI to fully function.

How many more dogs will die this year before the Minister for Racing ensures the Greyhound Industry Reform Inspector (GIRI) has the full powers he needs to do his job properly?

I think South Australians would be shocked to know that the Malinauskas Government’s two-year timeframe for greyhound industry reform has not yet even started. Despite fronting a press conference in December 2023 Minister Hildyard has yet again over-promised and under-delivered.

While the Government has yet to legislate for the granting the Independent Inspector the power he needs to do his job, taxpayer money continues to subsidise this bloodsport and dogs continue to die.

The greyhound racing industry has shown time and time again that it is incapable of reform.

We now see the Malinauskas Government promises of forced reform are falling flat.

Even now, when the industry should be on its best behaviour to avoid a full ban in two years’ time, we see the drugging and deaths of dogs. How does the Minister justify her lack of real action as recent outcomes from the Greyhound Racing South Australia Integrity Hearing Panel reveal instances of greyhounds being administered prohibited substances such as methamphetamines.

The Malinauskas Government needs to act swiftly to ensure the Parliament grants the Inspector the investigative powers he needs to hold this cruel industry to account, or better yet they need to stand up and ban the industry altogether.
