Statement in Response to Centofanti’s Statutes Amendment (Sex Industry - Exit Strategies and Spent Convictions) Bill

The South Australian Greens are committed to the decriminalisation of sex work as the Hon. Nicola Centofanti’s, Liberal MLC, discriminatory and stigmatising ‘spent convictions’ legislation was today voted down in SA Parliament.


The Greens firmly believe that full decriminalisation is the only way forward to ensure that sex workers are recognised and protected as legitimate workers in South Australia.

South Australia’s laws are among the most punitive in the country for sex workers, yet there is overwhelming public support for decriminalisation. Sex work is work and these workers deserve their rights under a Labor government.


Sex workers deserve dignity, recognition and protection under the law. It is time for South Australia to adopt a progressive and practical legal framework that regulates rather than punishes.
