Response to Premier’s Review Panel Report on the SA Museum

The Premier’s Review into the proposed South Australian Museum Restructure was released today, recommending the cessation of the former controversial restructure plans until a comprehensive strategic vision and strategy, as well as new funding models, can be established.

Earlier this year, a Greens’ motion initiated the Parliament of South Australia’s Statutory Authorities Review Standing Committee (SARC) inquiry into the South Australian Museum.

That inquiry is currently underway and aims to provide a detailed analysis and recommendations in the coming months. The next hearing of the SARC inquiry is scheduled for Monday September 23 and Mr Greg Mackie will be providing evidence.

Quotes Attributable to Tammy Franks MLC, SA Greens Spokesperson for the Arts:

The SA Greens cautiously welcome the Premier’s Review Panel Report but will continue to strongly for the preservation and enhancement of South Australia’s cultural institutions. We will continue to do a deep dive into the Museum through the SARC and allow those who have vision to have a voice.

We must prioritise our cultural institutions in South Australia. This isn’t just about the museum; it is about safeguarding access to vital cultural and scientific resources for generations to come.
We are calling on the Malinauskas Government to commit to providing the essential funding needed to secure the future of the South Australian Museum. If they are to ‘dream big’, not just reimaging themselves, in light of chronic underfunding.

Truly reimagining our Museum needs proper investment. The Premier must not just save the day by stepping in to stop harm - He must ensure his government also secures a bright future for our much-loved Museum.
