In August, the State Government appointed former Victorian Police Commissioner Graham Ashton to commission an inquiry into the regulatory environment, governance, and integrity of the South Australian greyhound racing industry. The inquiry was prompted following the release of distressing footage depicting the alleged abuse of multiple greyhounds and the use of live baiting, with a reporting date of 30 November 2023.

“Five days have passed since the SA public were promised the truth about greyhound racing and the SA Greens are calling on Malinauskas Government to publicly release the independent inquiry report.”
“Where is the report, Premier? Greyhound racing is an industry based on inherent cruelty, using innocent dogs to make money. The frequent conditions racing greyhounds endure are mistreatment, serious harm, and early callous deaths and a of this cruelty is subsidised by the taxpayer to the tune of millions of dollars a year.”
“It is time for this Government to take animal cruelty as seriously as the people of South Australia do. Disgraceful violations of animal welfare like those inflicted on greyhounds are a telling reminder that animal cruelty is an ongoing problem in the industry.”
While the inquiry has been underway five dogs have died on South Australian tracks.
Twelve dogs have been killed while racing on SA tracks in 2023.
