Today the Australian Education Union has announced that the majority of its members have voted in support of striking on the 2nd of February as the Marshall Liberal Government fails to ensure the safety of teachers and students ahead of a staggered return to face-to-face learning. The AEU have previously asked the Government to postpone the return to school for two weeks so that classrooms can be made safer for teachers and students. There needs to be more time for children under 12 to get vaccinated, and more certainty provided for 16-18 year olds who currently can’t get a booster. Quotes attributable to Tammy Franks MLC, Greens SA Parliamentary Leader: “The Greens are proudly supporting striking teachers on the 2nd of February. Teachers are right to be concerned about their health and safety, and that of their students. The Government has failed to ensure classrooms have proper ventilation to reduce the spread of COVID-19, they haven’t provided teachers with proper masks or tests, and has gone so far as to suggest that teachers may have to isolate from their families while continuing to teach. “This uncertainty around the return to school is not of teachers’ making – it is the result of the utter policy failure of the Marshall Liberal Government. Teachers deserve safe working conditions, and so far the Government hasn’t done anything to ensure that. “The last-minute, confusing changes to rules need to stop. The Marshall Liberal Government has had two years now to consider how we should deal with COVID in our schools, and how we should protect teachers and students. Teachers, students and their families deserve safety and certainty. |
