Greens Stand in Support of Julian Assange

The Greens will today support a motion in the Upper House recognising Julian Assange’s prosecution as an attack on freedoms of the press. Tammy Franks MLC will also speak at rally at 1pm on the steps of Parliament House organised by Adelaide for Assange and Amnesty International Australia to highlight the ongoing detention and persecution Julian Assange.

“If the United States is left unchallenged in their pursuit of charges against Julian Assange, it will have devastating consequences on the freedom of speech and the freedom of the press not just here in Australia, but across the globe. Parliament has a responsibility to do all it can to ensure that that does not happen.”

“In 2022 Anthony Albanese acknowledged that he has raised Julian Assange’s per personally with the United States government but is has since come to light that the Federal Government has made no representations to the US relating to Julian Assange. This now paints an even gimmer picture of Australia’s role in his continued persecution.”
