Fourth Greyhound Dies on SA Tracks as Malinauskas Government Drags its Feet on Industry Reform

A fourth greyhound has died on SA racetracks, days after the SA Greens condemned the Malinauskas Government’s failure to appoint an Independent Inspector for greyhound racing industry reform.   

The independent inspector was a key recommendation of the Ashton inquiry into the Governance of the Greyhound Racing Industry and crucial to overseeing and implementing its 86 recommendations that were accepted by the Malinauskas Government in December 2023 but are yet to be implemented in full.

The greyhound racing industry has shown it is incapable of real reform. As long as this cruel gambling-fuelled industry is allowed to continue, we will continue to see unacceptable animal abuse. 

The most crucial recommendation of the Ashton inquiry was the appointment of an independent inspector. Without this, the industry will continue to harm animals and corruptions and maladministration will be rife. The Malinauskas Government have failed at the first hurdle.
