STEVEN MARSHALL - STOP THESE SHIPS OF SHAME FROM USING OUR PORT
How many times do we need to be angered by the blatant cruelty of the live export trade before we turn our outrage into action?
The recent 60 minutes exposé was truly shocking - but it's sadly not the first time we have seen this cruelty. It has to end now.
More than 16,000 sheep from SA have died at sea over the past 5 years, with almost one every hundred perishing in these terrible circumstances.
Enough is enough. The Federal Goverment must put an end to live exports, while the SA Government needs to send a clear message that we won't stand for this any longer.
This petition to put an end to live exports will be delivered to the new premier, Steven Marshall.
By ending this trade, we can also create jobs in the chilled meat industry here in South Australia, which offers a win-win outcome for both animal welfare and local communities.
To put this into perspective:
- South Australian cold meet sheep exports are worth 20 times more than live sheep exports
- SA domestic meat processing has enough capacity to process every live sheep exported (plus another 1.2m sheep per year)
Join our campaign by signing our petition here to stand up for animal welfare and local jobs.
In 2015 the SA Greens will work to improve animal shelter transparency by introducing mandatory reporting, including when an animal is euthanised.
Treating euthanasia as a 'last resort' option lies at the heart of the Greens' Smarter Shelters reform plan.
The plan will make it illegal to euthanise a surrendered companion animal if another accredited shelter or rescue group is willing to take the animal within a set timeframe.
