Greens Gender & Sexuality spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC has strongly condemned the gay hate speech pamphlet being circulated in protest against the Marion Council’s recent decision to permanently fly the rainbow flag.

Greens Gender & Sexuality spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC has strongly condemned the gay hate speech pamphlet being circulated in protest against the Marion Council’s recent decision to permanently fly the rainbow flag.

The materials were brought to the attention of Ms Franks by Councillor Bruce Hull, who has lodged a formal complaint against the perpetrators of the gay hate materials with SAPOL.

“The Greens condemn this abhorrent gay hate propaganda in the strongest possible terms,” Ms Franks said.

“The decision by Marion Council to fly the rainbow flag should be celebrated, so it is disappointing to hear that a group of extremists is trying to undo this good work by distributing these materials.

“The materials circulating are offensive and discriminatory.

“It is also disappointing to hear that a Marion city councillor has put forward a motion calling on the Council to take down the flag.

“I urge people to contact all Marion city councillors letting them know that you support the rainbow flag being flown.

“Certainly, if this incident can teach us anything, it is that we have some way to go to overcome homophobia. If flying a flag can create such furore it goes to show how powerful a symbol of acceptance it really is.

“Flying the flag sends an important message to these homophobic extremists that their actions do not have the support of the majority of South Australians.”

The gay hate materials have been distributed throughout Westfield Marion and letterboxed in the Warradale area.
