The SA Greens are calling on Premier Jay Weatherill to “step up on behalf of South Australian sufferers” following yesterday’s announcement that Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk will enable sick Queenslanders to participate in the NSW medical cannabis trials.

“While Premier Weatherill is ‘supportive’ of NSW trials, he is still standing by the sidelines on the issue of medical cannabis,” Ms Franks said.

“Unlike the Queensland and Victorian Premiers, he has yet to step up and enable South Australians to participate in the NSW trials starting next year.

“The Premier can act now to help sick South Australians who are simply seeking hope and quality of life.

“The Premier should show this leadership and also issue directives to police and child protection so they use appropriate discretion where a sick person or their family are sourcing medicinal cannabis options. Again, this is something that has been done interstate.

“Without this leadership in our state, sick people and their families are being treated as child abusers or criminals, or both. We should be supporting these sufferers, not criminalising them for wanting good health.

“If Premier Weatherill were to speak with sufferers, as the NSW, Victorian and Queensland Premiers have all done, I am sure he would understand that we must take action on medical cannabis urgently, not simply wait on the sidelines watching other states pass us by.”
