Labor’s Bill to Privatise Public Sector Workers’ Comp Insurance – Defeated in Upper House

The State Parliament’s Upper House voted against Labor’s Return to Work Corporation of South Australia (Crown Claims Management) Amendment Bill, which sought to privatise public sector workers’ compensation insurance in South Australia. Under the Bill, Crown claims would be referred to claims agents – Employers Mutual Limited and Gallagher Bassett – rather than managed in-house by the relevant Department.

Greens Condemn Labor Attack On Autonomy of APY Land Rights Act

Greens Aboriginal Affairs spokesperson, Tammy Franks MLC, has condemned the Weatherill Labor Government’s attack on the autonomy of Indigenous governance on APY lands. Through the permanent extension of the highly controversial Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Land Rights (Miscellaneous) Amendment Bill 2014, amendments allow a Minister to sack the executive on a whim.

SA Animal Welfare Minister Takes 'Don't Know, Don't Care' stance on Greyhound Export Cruelty

The Greens have called on the Government Minister charged with responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act to take basic measures to ensure that the “Australian Greyhounds” currently kept in horrifying conditions and raced against cheetahs in Shanghai did not originate from South Australia.

Greens condemn cuts to Welfare Rights Centre SA and call on Weatherill Government to restore funding

We are shocked to learn about the loss of funding for the Welfare Rights Centre SA, in an era where the Federal Government are pursuing false debt notices and demonising our nation’s most vulnerable.

The Welfare Rights Centre SA has been supporting those in need for three decades and Greens MLC Tammy Franks said the move will disadvantage both the state and its people.

Greens To Vote Against Child Safety Bill

The Greens have called on the State Government to dump their fatally flawed child protection bill and go back to the drawing board on child protection law reforms. The Greens call echoes those made this week by the newly formed alliance of child protection community sector and legal groups highly critical of the Weatherill Government’s Children and Young People (Safety) Bill 2017.

The alliance consists of: The Law Society of South Australia, South Australian Council of Social Services, Australian Medical Association SA, Child and Family Welfare Association of SA, The Council for the Care of Children, Youth Affairs Council of SA and The Child Protection Reform Movement.

CEDUNA CASHLESS WELFARE CARD CREATING CRIME AND PUNISHMENT

The SA Greens today backed the calls of the Accountable Income Management Network in calling out the spin on the cashless welfare card that has been trialed in Ceduna. Ms Franks was in Ceduna last week and convened a meeting with locals many of whom raised significant concerns about the workings of the Indue (Cashless Welfare) Card.

A Greens Bill introduced by Tammy Franks MLC, to allow for the cultivation of industrial hemp has passed the State Parliament with the support of the State Government and the Opposition today. This Bill will authorise and regulate an industrial hemp industry in South Australia.
