The South Australian Greens have pledged their support for pensioners and will join with the non-Government parties in the Parliament to block cuts to pensioner concession payments on local government rates, Greens’ Social Inclusion spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC says.

“We urge the Weatherill Government to continue to provide this important rebate for pensioners despite the Federal cuts,” Ms Franks said.

“We are talking about an annual increase to rates of $190 for those who can least afford it.

“Just this morning I received a letter from Light Regional Council, which states that 863 households or 18 per cent of households in its council area have a weekly income of below $600. We are talking about people who are already struggling because of rising cost of living pressures.

“The Greens do not support our poorest concession holders being hit with a rate hike when they’re already doing it tough.

“This sort of rebate is designed to protect those who already struggle to balance the weekly budget. That’s why ongoing support for the rebate is absolutely essential.

“The Greens will block any move to do away with this important payment.”
