Don’t Relent on Greyhound Welfare, Say Greens

The SA Greens today urged the State Government to commit to improving animal welfare standards in the greyhound racing industry.

The SA Greens today urged the State Government to commit to improving animal welfare standards in the greyhound racing industry.

In question time today Greens Animal Welfare spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC asked the Minister for Sustainability, Environment and Conservation, Ian Hunter, whether he was considering an inquiry.

“Will you consider a broad ranging inquiry into the greyhound racing industry to ensure that the industry is able to maintain a social licence with the community of South Australia?” Ms Franks asked.

She also called for a review to cover issues including the wastage rate of greyhounds, overbreeding, high rates of injuries on the track, actions taken to safeguard greyhounds’ welfare on the track, industry transparency and accountability, and export to other countries with lower animal welfare standards.

“While South Australian trainers haven’t been implicated, the Government must heed the concerns of animal welfare experts,” Ms Franks said.

“I am heartened that the Government is currently awaiting feedback from the RSPCA and Greyhound Racing SA about legislative reforms.

“There is one undeniable take home message from last week’s Four Corners investigation and that is that the greyhound racing industry in Australia cannot be trusted to self-regulate.

“We urge the Government not to relent on this issue and to work with all stakeholders to ensure that animal welfare is a top priority.

“We need to see much higher levels of accountability from the sector.

“The Greens support the RSPCA’s calls for an overhaul of the industry’s regulatory arrangements, as well as greater transparency around ‘wastage’ and the number of animals being euthanised.

“I look forward to cross-party cooperation on this issue and I will also move to introduce mandatory reporting legislation to this end this year,” Ms Franks concluded.
