Devastating Job Losses at Port Augusta Show that Government Must Urgently Repower Regions

The expected closure of Port Augusta’s power stations is an opportunity to invest in solar thermal jobs to “repower the regions”, Greens Employment spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC says.

The expected closure of Port Augusta’s power stations is an opportunity to invest in solar thermal jobs to “repower the regions”, Greens Employment spokesperson Tammy Franks MLC says.

“The news today is devastating for the community of Port Augusta,” Ms Franks said.

“These are tough times for workers in this sector and they must be given every support possible to have a brighter future.

“It’s time to get serious about that future – and the Government must play a leading role in this transition by investing in the technologies of tomorrow.

“We know that there is overwhelming community support for solar thermal to replace the city’s coal stations.

“Let’s work together to make this a reality and give certainty to workers in the region that there is a future there.

“The Greens echo the calls of Repower Port Augusta Alliance by calling on the Premier to step up with urgent funding for solar thermal, as part of a managed transition to clean energy jobs.

“Repower Port Augusta Alliance’s proposal to replace the coal plants with six solar thermal plants and 95 wind turbines could create 1800 jobs and save five million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

“The Government has been presented with a massive problem, the solution is at their fingertips,” Ms Franks concluded.
